Grade: Top 5 Pick
Strengths: Towns has perfect size for a NBA Big, carrying 250 lbs on his 6’11 frame at only 19 years old. Offensively, he can run the floor very well, catches it cleanly going to the basket and finishes at the rim with either hand. Finishes through contact. He got better as the season went along using his body and angles to his advantage. KAT is comfortable drop stepping over either shoulder, using his shoulders to clear space to get off a clean look. He made 66% of his shots at the rim, uses the glass well, has a right and left hand hook, and flashes a turnaround jumper. Towns can also spread the floor, he has a soft touch out to 18 feet. Towns really has a good feel for the game, passes the ball very well from the high post and out of the double team in the post. KAT rebounds the ball very well, averaging over 13 a game per 40 minutes. Towns is a rim protector, a weakside shot blocker, and his length gives guys trouble finishing over him in the post. He moves his feet well enough to contain guards in pick and roll situations, then when recover back to the paint. Has the potential to be a two-way impact player as a pro.
Weaknesses: Towns is very talented, yet still raw and inexperienced. He’s a very foul prone player, bites on pump fakes, takes bad fouls. That will improve as he grows mentally and gets more game experience. His production wasn’t what it should of been at times because of his foul trouble. KAT is a decent athlete, but not a very quick or explosive leaper. He needs to strengthen his body overall going forward in order to deal with NBA bigs in the post on both O and D. Towns needs to continue to develop in the post, he has a good hook shot nice drop step, but he needs to develop a counter move, preferably an up and under, learn to use pump fakes to get clean looks and to the foul line.
