Strengths: Payne has decent size, but great length with his 6’7 wingspan at only 6’2. He has huge hands as well. He has a great feel for the game as a PG, knowing when to score, but also knowing when and how to keep his teammates involved. He is really good in transition, hitting his teammates filling the lanes, trailing or finding open shooters. He has the ability to get in the lane at will with his handle and crafty ball handling. Excels in pick and rolls because of his legit, deep shooting range, and ability to get in the lane, drop off passes to big men or find his spot up shooters. He can catch and shoot, or hit pull up 3’s from deep and make pull up jumpers off of the bounce. Will keep defenders honest because he’s a knockdown shooter. Not a great leaper, he uses floaters in the paint to score over size. He has quick hands and good anticipation in the passing lanes.
Weaknesses: His effort is hot/cold defensively. Too many times he lost focus or simply didn’t get in a defensive stance, allowing himself to be beaten by guys with much less talent. He’s only 20. and needs to add bulk and muscle to his frame in order to deal with the big physical guards as a pro, and in order to better absorb contact and finish at the rim. He dribbles very with his off hand, he just needs to work on finishing at the rim with it.
