The Carson Wentz era is officially over as the Philadelphia Eagles have sent him to the Indianapolis Colts. As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen , the Colts will send a 2021 third round pick and a conditional 2022 second round pick that could turn into a first round pick if Wentz meets certain milestones. According to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo, the 2022 pick would become a first round pick if Carson Wentz plays 75% of the Colts offensive snaps, or 70% of the snaps and they make the playoffs.
The Eagles drafted quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of the 2020 draft, while it was blatantly obvious that the team needed weapons on offense and defense. This obviously bothered Wentz, bothered him so much that he was the worst starting quarterback in the NFL this past season. The former second overall pick was 3-8-1 in his twelve starts, throwing for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns, a league leading 15 interceptions and was sacked a league high 50 times. He had issues with accuracy, seeing the field, holding onto the ball too long, and obviously turnovers.
Former head coach Doug Pedersen benched Carson in the second half of the Packers game, and even though the Eagles lost, Hurts played fairly decently. The team decided to go with the rookie from Oklahoma for the final four games and rumors started to swirl pertaining to Wentz’s unhappiness and wanting out of Philly.
In my opinion the Eagles did what they had to do, but they are at fault for things being the way they are. It was owner Jeff Lurie and his buddy Howie Roseman who decided to take a quarterback in round two, which then put their current franchise quarterback in his feelings. It’s also Lurie’s fault for allowing Roseman to be in charge of personnel decisions when it’s obvious that he’s blown the last three NFL Drafts. Finally I put blame on Carson Wentz for not having the mental and testicular fortitude to not allow the drafting of a second round quarterback bother him so badly. It hurt him so badly that it looked like he forgot how to play the quarterback position.
So now it’s Hurts job to earn, reports have came out on him planning to bring the wideouts down to Texas to work on their chemistry. Reliable NFL reports have also said that the Eagles plan on bringing in another QB to provide competition for the job. In his four starts Hurts was 77-148 for 1,061 yards, 52% completion rate, six touchdowns and four interceptions. He also provides the ability to make plays with his legs as he rushed for 354 yards on 63 carries and four touchdowns. Hurts provided an initial spark, it seemed like his teammates played hard for him, but he showed a lot of weaknesses in his game as a passer that I seen on his college tape. I gave him a fourth round grade and thought that the Eagles drafted him way too high. With the team owning the sixth pick in the draft, I think it’s a must that they take a QB with that pick if they have a chance because I don’t believe Hurts is the long term answer.
