Since winning Super Bowl LII, the Philadelphia Eagles have been on a yearly decline, for a medley of reasons. The two main culprits and reasons for this decline is General Manager Howie Roseman and Quarterback Carson Wentz. The Eagles struck lightning in a bottle during the 2017 season, Wentz played at an elite level before being injured and replaced by Philadelphia all-time hero Nick Foles and every trade and free agent acquisition made by Roseman was a hit. But since then, the Eagles GM has missed time and time again via the draft. I’m here to start the repair with my Philadelphia Eagles Mock Draft.
Pick 6. Justin Fields QB Ohio State 6’3 228 lbs Junior
I know most Eagles fans will think I’m insane for drafting a QB a year after the team drafted Jalen Hurts in the second round, but to be honest, I’m not sold on Hurts as my guy moving forward. After evaluating his tape last year, I thought the earliest he should have been drafted was the 4th round. Hurts had some flashes, but his deficiencies as a passer were evident as well. Fields brings an elite level arm, accuracy to all three levels of the field and the ability to throw layer shots with anticipation. He also can make plays with his feet. It’s not often you pick in the top ten of the draft and if Fields is there you take him.
Pick 38. Alex Leatherwood OT/OG Alabama 6’6 315 lbs Senior
The Eagles offensive line is getting old, let’s be really honest. Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks, and Jason Kelce are all age 30 or above and have dealt with injuries recently. Andre Dillard was a 2019 first round pick who hasn’t shown much as of yet due to injury. Jordan Mailata was a breath of fresh air in 2020, who showed the ability to play both tackle positions and got better with more reps. In Leatherwood, the Eagles get themselves an high level tackle prospect with the ability to bump inside at guard until Lane Johnson possibly moves on. I’m a big fan of drafting lineman with versatility.
Pick 66. ( Traded up four spots from 70th w/ the Jets for a 6th round pick)
Jabril Cox LB LSU 6’3 231 lbs Senior
The Eagles as a franchise have devalued the linebacker position for a long time, especially in this current regime under owner Jeff Lurie. When watching the team’s defense in 2020, the lack of talent at the linebacker position was very evident. The group lacks instincts, eye discipline, speed and coverage ability. Jabril Cox brings these things to the table. He plays well in space, can cover man to man, in zone and tackles very well. He’d provide an instant upgrade for the Birds.
Pick 151. Kylin Hill RB Miss St. 5’8 214 lbs Senior
The Eagles could really use another talented back to pair with Miles Sanders and at the 151st pick, Hill would be a steal. He returned to college for his senior year, but I thought his 2019 tape warranted at least a top 100 selection. He only played in three games this past season after opting out for the draft. He only carried the ball 15 times, but he caught 23 passes for 258 yards and a touchdown in a pass heavy offense. He has a good combo of strength, wiggle, balance, and speed.
Pick 155. Caden Sterns S Texas 6’1 207 lbs Junior
With Rodney McLeod up in age, play declining and coming off an ACL injury, the Birds need more young prospects at the safety position. Sterns excels at playing single high and the halves in coverage. He also flashes some ability covering one on one in the slot.
Pick 192. Cornell Powell WR Clemson 6’0 205lbs rSenior
After being a backup and special teams guy in his first four seasons, Powell had a breakout season in 2020, opening scouts eyes. 53 Receptions, 882 yards and 7 touchdowns. Lacks elite speed, but makes up for it with being physical at the top of routes and at the catch point. Even if he doesn’t crack the lineup as a receiver, he’s a guy who could add value on special teams cover units.
Pick 220. Marco Wilson CB Florida 6’1 191lbs rJunior
The Eagles have Darius Slay at one cornerback position, but the corners opposite of him and in the slot were an issue the entire season. With Avonte Maddox returning from injury and not much depth behind him, Wilson is my selection. He’s long, has decent athleticism, and can play press and off man.
Pick 228. Khyris Tonga DT BYU 6’4 321 lbs Senior
Tonga is a big run stuffing nose tackle in the form of former Eagles draft pick Beau Allen. He won’t give you much as a pass rusher due to lack of quickness, but he can provide the occasional push with power. He definitely is a good fit as a 1 or 0 technique in odd man fronts.
